Using a baby monitor on holiday, at the cottage, or at grandma's
Away from home, a baby monitor is useful in different ways than at home. You do not know the house, you do not know how far the Wi-Fi reaches, and the child may sleep in a room that is farther away than usual. This is where it helps to have a setup that does not require extra dedicated hardware and can be prepared from phones you already brought with you.
A traditional monitor can work well, but you need to pack it, bring the right charger, and rely on its range through walls or into the garden. With Bebamon, you use two devices: one stays with the child, and the other stays with you.
What to prepare before bedtime
The most important step is to test the setup in advance. Connect both devices to the available Wi-Fi or cellular data, place the baby device where it will actually stand, and walk to the place where you want to monitor from. Check audio, notifications, and video if you plan to use it.
Keep the baby device on a charger. Live streaming, microphone use, camera use, and an active screen can drain a battery faster than a phone sitting idle in a pocket. In an unfamiliar house, it is better to solve the power outlet before bedtime.
Sound and motion alerts are evaluated on the baby device. Bebamon does not store audio or video recordings by default, but the live stream still needs a working network connection.
Wi-Fi, cellular data and weak signal
Connection quality is the most common weak point while travelling. If both devices are on good Wi-Fi, you are not using mobile data and conditions are usually more stable than over cellular. That does not mean it is fair to promise that monitoring works without internet or without a connection to the service. If the network is slow, overloaded, or patchy, the live stream can be affected.
If you are away from the same house or the same network, the baby device connection matters most. If the phone near the child has no usable Wi-Fi and no usable cellular data, no app can provide reliable remote monitoring.
A hotspot can help when one device has good cellular data and you want to connect the other through it. It does not help in a place with no usable mobile signal at all.
At grandma’s, out in the garden
A typical scenario is simple: the child falls asleep in a bedroom, and you want to sit in the garden or on the terrace. Leave an older phone by the crib on a charger, run it as the baby device, and keep the parent phone with you.
Before the child falls asleep, check that the Wi-Fi really reaches the place where you will sit. If not, try a different spot for the parent phone, use cellular data, or plan to stay closer to the house.
The Free plan is enough for audio monitoring, sound and motion detection, and notifications. For a single afternoon, you often do not need video at all.
A few things worth doing
- Test the connection before bedtime.
- Keep the baby device on a charger.
- Check volume, notifications, and app permissions.
- Expect video to use more data and battery than audio.
- In places with weak signal, leave yourself a margin: audio is lighter and often more reliable than video.
Bebamon is useful while travelling mainly because it does not require extra hardware. You can see the free features and paid options on the pricing page.
